the Lofoten Islands

Day 9:

Another transit stage takes us back to Norway and one of northern Europe’s most spectacular gems, the Lofoten Islands, which we reach by ferry.

The vessel’s prow is an ideal vantage point from which to admire – and photograph – the incredible scenery. Green and blue mountains plunge straight down into the sea, like a miniature version of the Alps surrounded by water.

There is nothing organised for this evening, so the slower cars can take their time getting here. Most of us decide to spend the night in a “rorbuer”, the former fishermen’s huts for which the islands are famous.
